Smart Lighting, Designed By a Licensed Electrician

Smart lighting on the Sunshine Coast tends to mean one of two things: a few bluetooth bulbs that lose connection every Tuesday, or a $40,000 Lutron HomeWorks system. There is a lot of useful ground in between, and we will be honest about which option suits your home rather than pushing whichever one earns us the bigger margin.

A proper smart lighting install starts with how you actually live. Where do you want one button to dim the kitchen, bench lights, dining pendants and hallway in the evening? Which rooms want sensor-on-arrival lighting? Where do you want a scene called "Movie", or "Bed", or "Away"? Once we know that, the right system is mostly chosen for you.

We are a licensed Sunshine Coast electrician (QLD 1510557, NSW 338814C) who specialises in smart lighting wiring AND programming. That matters because dimming-LED compatibility, neutral-at-switch wiring, circuit loading and dimmer pairing all need to be designed before the cable goes in. Get it wrong and you get hum, flicker, switches that fail at 12 months. We get it right.

What Smart Lighting Actually Does

Scenes & Single-Button Control

One button dims the kitchen, raises pendants, brings up the dining wash, sets the hallway to night-low. Another button does it all in reverse for "Movie". Lighting that matches what you are actually doing in the room, not just on/off.

Schedules & Astronomical Time

External lights come on 30 minutes before sunset, off at 11pm, garden path low overnight. Bedside dim at 6:30am to wake gently. Schedules track with the seasons and your routine - no resetting timers in summer.

Motion & Occupancy Sensors

Hallway and ensuite lights come on at 5% when motion is detected after 11pm. Pantry lights come on automatically. Lights turn off after no movement for 5 minutes. Sensors mean you stop touching switches at all in some rooms.

App & Voice Control

Lighting on your phone with proper room-by-room and scene-by-scene control. Voice via Google Home, Apple HomeKit or Alexa for the lazy moments. App is the secondary control - good keypads on the wall are still primary.

Tunable & Dynamic Lighting

Tunable white that warms in the evening (better sleep) and cools in the morning (better mornings). Colour scenes for entertaining. Dim curves calibrated per fixture so nothing strobes or shifts colour as it dims.

Away Mode & Security Integration

Lights cycle realistically when the house is empty. Triggered alarm flashes the whole house. Smart locks at the front door arm the system on the way out and trigger the welcome scene on the way in.

Where Smart Lighting Quietly Wins

Open-Plan Kitchen / Living

One scene for cooking (bright benches, downlights at 100%), one for dining (pendants up, downlights to 30%), one for evening (everything warm, low, hallway path-lit). The room you spend most time in is the room smart lighting matters most.

Bedrooms & Master Suite

Bedside scene that dims everything else in the house in one button. Master ensuite path-lit overnight at 5%. Wake-up scene that ramps slowly. The kind of lighting that is hard to live without once you have it.

Outdoor Entertaining & Pools

Pool, deck, garden, pathway all on a single "Outdoor Evening" scene. Schedules tied to sunset. Pool light colours from your phone for the kids on Friday night. Step lighting on at dusk for safety.

Hallways, Stairs & Bathrooms

Motion-on after dark at 5%, off when no one's there. Stair-edge LED for safe overnight movement. Bathroom on at 30% for night use rather than full retina-burn. Quiet, automatic, you stop thinking about it.

Acreage & External Lighting

Driveway and entry path on at sunset, garden lighting on schedule, security flood automatic on detected motion in zones you actually care about. Long-driveway homes in Buderim, Palmview and Pelican Waters benefit massively.

Holiday Homes

Realistic away-mode cycling, schedules that adjust to make the home look occupied, remote control before guests arrive. Common brief for second properties in Noosa, Sunshine Beach and Coolum.

Retrofit, Renovate or New Build

New Build Pre-Wire

The right time to install full smart lighting. We attend pre-frame meetings, run cables for Lutron / C-Bus / HDL backbones, size the switchboard and comms cabinet for the controllers. Set up at frame stage costs a fraction of any later option.

Renovation Integration

Renovating the kitchen, bathroom or open-plan area is the natural moment to introduce smart lighting in those rooms while running pull-strings into the rest of the house for future expansion.

Retrofit Smart Switches

Existing house, no plans to renovate? We retrofit Shelly relays behind your existing switches, or replace switches with Lutron RadioRA 3 keypads. No plaster off the walls, no second trade. Same wall plate look, full smart functionality.

Outdoor & Garden Smart Lighting

Smart lighting design specifically for outdoor entertaining areas - garden, pool, patio, driveway, gate. Often the easiest place to start because outdoor circuits can be added without disturbing the rest of the house.

Why Choose Xceed Electrical?

We're not just another electrician. Here's why Sunshine Coast homeowners and businesses trust us.

Wired AND Programmed

A licensed electrician designs the wiring AND programs the lighting scenes. Most "smart lighting" failures come from a sparky who can wire but cannot program, or an installer who can program but had to subcontract the wiring.

LED Compatibility Done Properly

Smart dimmers + LED downlights = potential headache. We pre-test fixture compatibility, calibrate dim curves per circuit, and pair drivers and dimmers that actually play together. No flicker, no hum, no switches replaced after 12 months.

Brand-Agnostic Recommendation

We will tell you when Lutron is the right answer and when Shelly does the job for a tenth of the price. The recommendation is based on your home and how you live - not on which brand pays us the most.

Built to Outlive the Trend

The platforms we install (Lutron, C-Bus, HDL, KNX) are still being supported on 15-year-old homes. We deliberately avoid cloud-only or subscription-locked platforms that disappear when the manufacturer pivots.

How It Works

Getting started with Xceed Electrical is simple.

1

Walkthrough

We come out, walk the house, and listen to which rooms matter, which scenes you would actually use, and what is annoying about the current lighting. Quick, practical, no spec-flogging.

2

Design & Quote

You receive a documented design - which system, which keypads, which fixtures, which scenes, fixed-price quote. Often two options at different price points so you can compare.

3

Install & Program

One licensed electrician for the lot. Wiring, fixture install, controller install, scene programming, dimmer calibration. We test every scene and every fixture before we leave.

4

Calibration & Tweaks

Walkthrough with you, scene tweaks in the room, app on your phone. Most clients come back to us 2-3 months later for small adjustments as they live with it - that is included.

Smart Lighting - Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

How much does smart lighting cost on the Sunshine Coast?

A simple Shelly + Home Assistant retrofit on existing wiring (4-8 rooms with scenes and app control) runs $2,500 to $6,000. A wired HDL or C-Bus install on a new 4-bedroom build is typically $12,000 to $25,000. A full Lutron HomeWorks or KNX install on architectural homes runs $35,000 to $90,000+. Always quoted upfront against your home.

What is the difference between smart lighting and LED lighting?

LED lighting is the bulb or fixture - efficient, long-life, low energy. Smart lighting is the control system - scenes, schedules, sensors, app, voice, dimming. You can have LED without smart, or smart without LED. The two combine well, and most smart lighting installs upgrade to LED at the same time.

Can you install smart lighting without rewiring?

Yes - Shelly relays go behind your existing switches, no plaster off, same wall plates. Lutron RadioRA 3 keypads can replace existing switches one-for-one. HDL and C-Bus need cable runs to the controllers but can usually be added during a renovation. We will tell you which is realistic for your home.

Will smart lighting work with my existing LED downlights?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Many cheap LED downlights will not dim cleanly with smart dimmers - they flicker or hum. We pre-test compatibility before the install and recommend changing fixtures if needed. Better fixtures plus calibrated dimmers gives genuinely beautiful dimming, not just on/off.

Do I need internet for smart lighting to work?

The lighting itself works locally - even with internet down, your switches and keypads still work and scenes still run. Internet is only needed for remote control via the app when you are away from home, and for voice assistants. Wired systems like Lutron, C-Bus and HDL are particularly resilient because the local controller does not depend on cloud at all.

Can I add smart lighting one room at a time?

Yes - very common. Most clients start with the kitchen / open-plan area, add bedrooms and outdoors next, then maybe the master ensuite and entry later. The system you choose at the start determines how easy adding more is - we plan for expansion from the first install.

Will my smart lighting work with Google Home or Apple HomeKit?

Yes - all the systems we install integrate with Google Home, Apple HomeKit and Alexa. Voice control is the cherry on top, not the main interface. Wall keypads stay primary because they are still faster than asking a speaker.

Does smart lighting save energy?

Yes - mostly through scenes that automatically dim, schedules that turn things off, and sensors that ensure lights are only on when needed. The savings depend on how the home is currently lit. For a typical Sunshine Coast home with halogen downlights, smart lighting plus LED upgrade can cut lighting energy by 60-80%.

Can you tie smart lighting into my alarm or CCTV?

Yes - that is one of the strongest reasons to use smart lighting. Triggered alarm flashes the whole house, away-mode cycles lights realistically while you are out, the front door light comes on when CCTV detects motion. Tight integration is only possible because the same team installs the lot.

Which suburbs do you install smart lighting in?

All of the Sunshine Coast - Noosa, Sunshine Beach, Buderim, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Coolum Beach, Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Palmview, Sippy Downs, Birtinya. Hinterland (Maleny, Montville) and travel further for larger architectural installs.
