Professional Cooktop Installation Across the Sunshine Coast
Induction cooktops are the fastest-growing kitchen appliance category on the Sunshine Coast. They are faster than gas, safer than radiant electric, and cheaper to run than both. The catch is that a 60 cm induction cooktop pulls 32 amps under full load - way more than the 10A or 15A circuit a standard kitchen typically has. Most older Sunshine Coast kitchens need a switchboard and cable upgrade before a new induction cooktop can even be plugged in.
We install across the whole coast. Down south through Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Currimundi, and Wurtulla. Across the coastal strip in Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, and Coolum Beach. Up the ranges to Buderim, Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek, and Forest Glen. And all the way north to Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Springs, and Peregian Beach. Induction, ceramic radiant, traditional electric solid plate, and gas-electric combo cooktops all covered.
The number-one mistake on cooktop installs is undersized cable. The supplied cable that comes with most cooktops is 6mm twin-and-earth - rated for 32A on a short run. If your switchboard is 15 metres away, you need 10mm cable to handle voltage drop. Get it wrong and the cable overheats, the cooktop runs at reduced performance, or worst case, you have a fire risk in the wall cavity. We size cable for the actual run length, every time.
Xceed handles every kind of cooktop install - replacing an existing electric cooktop with a new induction unit, full kitchen rough-in for a new build, paired oven and cooktop combos, or upgrading from gas to induction (including the dedicated circuit, breaker, and capping the gas line). What sets us apart on the Sunshine Coast is that we install the cooktops, the ovens, the lighting, the smart controls, and the data cabling all under the one licensed team (QLD Electrical Licence 1510557, NSW 338814C).
Every install is completed to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000 with the right cable size, RCBO protection, and an accessible isolation switch. We test the cooktop under load before sign-off and provide a Certificate of Electrical Compliance with every job. Required for warranty claims and real estate compliance.

Gas vs Electric vs Induction: Choosing Your Cooktop
Why Induction Is Winning
Faster than gas to boil water (around 50% faster), safer (no flame, surface barely heats), and significantly cheaper to run. Pots and pans must be ferrous (a magnet must stick) - most modern cookware is fine.
Ceramic Radiant vs Induction
Ceramic radiant heats the surface, then the pan. Slower to respond and harder to clean than induction. Cheaper upfront, similar wiring requirements (32A dedicated circuit). Good budget alternative.
Cookware Compatibility
Induction needs ferrous-base cookware - cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, enamelled steel. Aluminium, copper, and most glass cookware will not work. We can recommend a compatibility test before you commit to induction.
32A Dedicated Circuit Requirement
Most full-size induction and ceramic cooktops draw 32A under full load. That is a dedicated circuit with 6mm or 10mm cable (depending on run length), 32A RCBO, and isolation switch. Older kitchens almost always need a switchboard upgrade alongside.
Cable Size and Run Length
Cable size is determined by current draw AND run distance from switchboard. 6mm cable handles 32A up to about 12m; longer runs need 10mm. Undersizing causes voltage drop and reduced cooktop performance. We measure and size correctly.
Isolation Switch Position
AS/NZS 3000 requires an accessible isolation switch within reach of the cooktop. Above bench, on adjacent wall, or in cupboard with door open. Behind the cooktop is non-compliant. We position correctly every time.

Cooktop Installation - Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
How much does cooktop installation cost on the Sunshine Coast?
A like-for-like cooktop swap (existing 32A circuit and isolator in place) typically runs $260 to $420. New installs requiring dedicated 32A circuit and switchboard work run $750 to $1,400. Gas-to-induction conversions including gas-fitter coordination run higher. Every job gets a full upfront quote.
Why do induction cooktops need a 32A circuit?
A 60cm induction cooktop with all four zones on full power can draw 7 kW - that is 32 amps at 240V. The circuit, breaker, and cable all need to handle that peak load safely. Standard 10A or 15A kitchen circuits cannot. We install the right size circuit every time.
Can I switch from gas to induction?
Yes - this is one of our most common cooktop conversions on the Sunshine Coast. We install the new 32A circuit, RCBO, isolation switch, and connection point. A licensed gas fitter caps and removes the gas point. We coordinate both trades so the kitchen is back together fast.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install a cooktop?
Yes. Cooktop installation involves connecting fixed wiring at significant current draw (32A) - licensed electrical work in Queensland. DIY voids your home insurance and the manufacturer warranty. Every Xceed install is performed by a licensed electrician (QLD Licence 1510557).
How long does cooktop installation take?
A like-for-like swap with existing circuit takes 1 to 2 hours. New installs requiring fresh 32A cable run, switchboard work, and isolator install run half a day to a full day. Gas-to-induction conversions including gas-fitter visit are typically a one-day job. We give you a clear time window with every quote.
Will my existing kitchen wiring handle a new induction cooktop?
Often not. Older kitchens have 10A or 15A circuits - way under the 32A an induction cooktop needs. The cable in the wall is also typically 1.5mm or 2.5mm, undersized for 32A. We test the existing circuit during the quote and tell you straight what needs upgrading.
Do all pots and pans work on induction?
No - induction needs ferrous (magnetic) cookware. A magnet must stick to the pan base. Most modern cookware is fine: cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, enamelled steel. Aluminium, copper, and glass do not work. Bring a magnet to the cookware drawer to check.
What is the difference between induction and ceramic cooktops?
Induction heats the pan directly using magnetic induction - the surface stays cool until the pan transfers heat back. Ceramic radiant heats the surface, then the pan. Induction is faster, more energy efficient, and safer. Ceramic is cheaper and works with any cookware.
Can I install an oven and cooktop at the same time?
Yes - this is our most common combined kitchen install. Each appliance gets its own dedicated circuit and isolation switch (oven on 20A, cooktop on 32A). We schedule both as a single visit. See our oven installation page for combined pricing.
Will my switchboard need upgrading for induction?
Often yes. Older switchboards may not have the spare capacity, the right type of breakers, or compliant safety switches needed for a 32A cooktop circuit. We assess the switchboard during the quote and include any upgrade work upfront. See our switchboard upgrades page.
