Professional Sensor Light Installation Across the Sunshine Coast
Sensor lights are one of the cheapest, fastest electrical upgrades you can do. They cut power use because lights only run when needed, they boost security by lighting a yard whenever movement triggers them, and they are genuinely useful for hands-full moments - groceries from the car, kids walking up the drive, the cat at 11pm. The hard part is picking the right type for the right job and installing it where it actually triggers correctly.
We install sensor lights across the whole coast. Down south through Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Currimundi, and Wurtulla. Across the coastal strip in Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, and Coolum Beach. Up the ranges to Buderim, Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek, and Forest Glen. And right up to Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Springs, and Peregian Beach. Indoor, outdoor, retrofits, and new builds all covered.
Most badly-installed sensor lights we see are aimed at the wrong angle (catching cars, neighbours, or moving trees as false triggers), set with the wrong sensitivity (lights flicking on every gust of wind), or wired into the wrong circuit (so they flicker when other appliances kick in). We install with the right PIR coverage angle, the correct lux threshold, and the right wiring path so the light only triggers when something real is happening.
Xceed handles every kind of sensor light job - a single PIR flood at the back door, full perimeter coverage around a property, dusk-to-dawn pathway lighting, indoor occupancy sensors for laundries and walk-in robes, or smart-home integrated motion-triggered scenes. What sets us apart on the Sunshine Coast is that we install the sensor lights, the security cameras, the smart-home controls, and the data cabling all under the one licensed team (QLD Electrical Licence 1510557, NSW 338814C).
We use quality PIR sensors and rated outdoor floods - marine-grade where the property is close to salt air. We adjust lux thresholds, sensitivity, and on-time on the day so the sensor behaves the way you want from day one. No false triggers, no dim periods at the wrong time of night.
Sensor Light Installation Services on the Sunshine Coast
Outdoor PIR Flood Lights
Motion-activated LED flood lights for driveways, side paths, back yards, and entries. Adjustable PIR head, lux threshold, and on-time. Standard and high-lumen security options.
Wall-Mounted Coach Lights with Sensors
Decorative outdoor wall lights with built-in PIR sensors. Look-good lighting that doubles as security at front entries and back doors.

Security Sensor Floods (High Lumen)
High-output 4,000-10,000 lumen LED security floods with wide-angle PIR coverage. Genuine deterrent lighting for properties needing serious security.
Smart Sensor Light Integration
PIR or microwave sensors integrated into smart-home systems - HDL, Clipsal C-Bus, Google Home, Apple HomeKit. Trigger scenes, alerts, or recordings.
Choosing the Right Sensor Light Setup
PIR vs Microwave Sensors
PIR (passive infrared) detects body heat - cheap, reliable, slight delay. Microwave radar detects motion through some materials and works in extreme temperatures. PIR is right for 95% of residential jobs; microwave for cold rooms or behind glass.
Detection Range and Angle
Most domestic PIR sensors cover 8 to 12 metres at 110 to 180 degrees. We position so the sensor sees genuine approach paths but ignores neighbouring driveways, swaying trees, and passing cars.
Lux Threshold (How Dark Before It Triggers)
A lux threshold sets how dark it has to be before the sensor responds. We typically set 10 to 30 lux - dark enough for night use without triggering at dusk or in shaded daylight.
On-Time Setting (How Long the Light Stays On)
Most sensors offer 10 seconds to 10 minutes. For driveways and entries, 60 to 180 seconds is usually right. Shorter for high-traffic spaces, longer for security floods covering wider areas.
Lumen Output for Security vs Convenience
Convenience lighting needs 600 to 1,200 lumens (one or two LED globes). Security floods deter trespassers - aim for 4,000+ lumens with wide-angle distribution. Brighter is not always better; even coverage matters more.
Photocell vs Motion Trigger
Photocell only (dusk-to-dawn) gives you constant low-level lighting through the night. Motion only gives you bright bursts when triggered. Most outdoor sensors combine both - photocell sets when the motion trigger is active.

Sensor Light Installation - Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
How much does sensor light installation cost on the Sunshine Coast?
A single PIR flood with new wiring typically runs $220 to $380. Multiple floods around a perimeter, or smart-integrated sensor lighting, run higher depending on cabling distance and complexity. Replacement-only (existing wiring) is cheaper. Every job gets a full upfront quote.
How does a PIR sensor light work?
A PIR sensor (passive infrared) detects the heat signature of a moving person or animal against the background temperature. When triggered, it switches the light on for the on-time you have set. It only triggers when the surrounding lux level is below the threshold you have set - so it does not run during the day.
Why does my sensor light keep triggering for no reason?
Usually one of three things - PIR aimed at a heat-emitting surface (a road, sun-warmed wall, or HVAC unit), sensitivity set too high catching small movement (leaves, possums, cats), or false trigger from RF interference. We diagnose by adjusting angle, sensitivity, and lux on the day.
Can sensor lights save me money?
Yes. A sensor light only runs when triggered. A standard outdoor light left on all night uses around 30 to 40 hours of power per week; a sensor light might run 30 to 60 minutes total. Combined with LED globes, you save 80%+ compared to halogen-on-all-night.
Can I install a sensor light myself?
Plug-in sensor lights with rechargeable batteries - yes. Hardwired sensor lights connecting to fixed wiring - no. That is licensed electrical work in Queensland. DIY hardwired installs void insurance and are illegal. Every Xceed install is performed by a licensed electrician.
Will sensor lights work in wet weather?
Yes - we install IP-rated outdoor sensor floods (typically IP44 or IP65) that handle rain, dust, and salt air. Marine-grade options for properties close to the beach. We never install indoor-rated sensors outside.
Can I link sensor lights to my security system or CCTV?
Yes. We integrate motion sensors with Ajax security systems, CCTV, and smart-home platforms. A motion trigger can switch on lights, start a recording, send a notification, or run a smart-home scene. Properly integrated, sensor lights do far more than just illuminate.
How long does sensor light installation take?
A single PIR flood replacing an existing fitting takes 1 to 1.5 hours. New installs needing cabling can take 2 to 4 hours depending on the run. Full-perimeter installs with multiple lights and a single timer/controller take half a day. We give you a clear time window with every quote.
Can I adjust the timing and sensitivity after installation?
Yes - most sensors have on-board adjustment dials for time, sensitivity, and lux. We set sensible defaults at install, then walk you through how to fine-tune them. Smart-integrated sensors are adjustable from the app.
Do sensor lights work indoors?
Absolutely. Indoor occupancy sensors are popular in laundries, walk-in robes, pantries, garages, and stairwells. Lights switch on automatically when you enter and off after you leave. We can also combine occupancy sensors with exhaust fan timers for bathrooms.
