Professional LED Downlight Installation Across the Sunshine Coast
LED downlights have become the default ceiling lighting for Sunshine Coast homes, and it is easy to see why. They use up to 80% less power than the halogens they replace, last five to ten times longer, run cool to the touch, and give a clean modern light that suits everything from a beach house in Mooloolaba to a renovated Queenslander up in Buderim.
We install across the whole coast. Down south that means Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Wurtulla, Bokarina, and Currimundi. Through the coastal strip we cover Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, and Coolum Beach. Up the ranges to Buderim, Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek, and Forest Glen. And all the way north to Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Springs, and Peregian Beach. Whether it is a single kitchen retrofit or a full new-build lighting plan, the work goes in the same way.
If your home still runs old halogen downlights, the case for upgrading is hard to argue with. Each halogen globe pulls 50 watts and runs at over 250 degrees Celsius - hot enough to feel through a ceiling. They burn out every twelve to eighteen months, so a typical home with thirty halogens chews through $400 to $600 a year on globes and power compared to LED. Halogens are also a real fire risk in roof spaces. They are hot enough to ignite ceiling insulation that drifts too close, which is exactly why insurance assessors flag them on inspection. Modern LED downlights fix all of it: 8 to 13 watts each, cool to the touch, IC-4 rated to sit safely under insulation, and built to last 25,000+ hours.
Xceed handles every kind of LED downlight job - swapping out a few burnt-out halogens, mapping out a full new-build lighting plan, retrofitting an entire home, or wiring up dimmable and smart-controlled downlights. What sets us apart on the Sunshine Coast is that we install the lighting, the smart controls, the security system, and the data cabling all under the one licensed team (QLD Electrical Licence 1510557, NSW 338814C). You do not end up juggling three different contractors. And every install meets Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000 - that part is not negotiable.
We work with quality fittings from trusted brands and will talk you through colour temperature, beam angle, IP rating, and dimmer compatibility before anything goes in the ceiling. The result performs the way you imagined it would. No flickering, no buzzing, no surprises.

Choosing the Right LED Downlights for Your Sunshine Coast Home
Colour Temperature: Warm, Neutral, or Cool?
Warm white (2700-3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral white (4000K) works well in kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices. Cool white (5000K+) is best for garages and workshops. Tri-colour switchable downlights let you change the colour at install with a tiny switch on the fitting.
How Many Downlights Do I Need Per Room?
Rule of thumb: one LED downlight per 1.4 to 1.6 square metres of floor space. A 4x4m living room needs roughly 9 to 11 downlights for even, glare-free coverage. We plan layouts based on ceiling height, room shape, and beam angle so no spot is darker than another.
Diameter and Beam Angle Explained
A 90mm cut-out is the most common downlight size by a long way. 60-degree beam angles suit general room lighting; 38-degree narrow beams work better for feature lighting and high ceilings. Wider beams need fewer fittings; narrow beams give more drama and contrast.
Wattage and Lumens - What Actually Matters
Modern 8-13W LED downlights deliver 800 to 1,000 lumens - enough to fully replace a 50W halogen with no compromise on brightness. Lumens, not watts, are the brightness metric you should compare. Higher lumens mean brighter light, regardless of power draw.
IC-4 Rating for Insulation Safety
Always specify IC-4 (or IC-F) rated LED downlights. They can be safely covered by ceiling insulation, keeping your Sunshine Coast home thermally efficient and reducing fire risk. Older non-IC halogen fittings required insulation to be cut back, leaving cold spots and energy loss.
IP Ratings for Bathrooms and Outdoor Areas
Showers, ensuites, and outdoor eaves require IP44 or IP65-rated LED downlights. Standard fittings used in wet zones breach AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and put you at safety and insurance risk. We always specify the correct IP rating for the zone.
LED Downlight Installation Across the Sunshine Coast
Caloundra to Pelican Waters
We do plenty of work down the south end - Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Golden Beach, Currimundi, Kings Beach, Moffat Beach, Shelly Beach, and across to Aroona. Same-day quotes for halogen retrofits and full-home re-lights.
Maroochydore, Mooloolaba & Coastal Strip
The coastal strip is where most of our LED downlight work happens - Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Cotton Tree, Buddina, Minyama, Warana, and Bokarina. Marine-grade fittings make a real difference this close to salt air.
Buderim, Mountain Creek & Sippy Downs
Up the hill we cover Buderim, Mountain Creek, Sippy Downs, Forest Glen, Tanawha, Kuluin, and Kunda Park. Older Buderim homes with high ceilings, raked roofs, and timber-lined rooms are a bit of a specialty.
Noosa Region & Hinterland
Up in the Noosa region - Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Springs, Peregian Beach, Tewantin, Doonan, and Eumundi - smart and tunable LED downlights are popular in renovations. We handle plenty of those.
Nambour, Yandina & Hinterland
Hinterland properties get the same standard of work. We service Nambour, Yandina, Woombye, Palmwoods, Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, and Flaxton. Acreage and rural installs are welcome - we travel for the right jobs.
Coolum, Mudjimba & Northern Suburbs
North of the river - Coolum Beach, Mudjimba, Marcoola, Twin Waters, Pacific Paradise, Mount Coolum, and Yaroomba. New-build LED downlight design and full-home layouts are common up that way.

LED Downlight Installation - Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
How much does LED downlight installation cost on the Sunshine Coast?
Pricing depends on the number of lights, ceiling type, whether new wiring or a dimmer is required, and the quality of fitting you choose. Most homes fall between $80 and $160 per downlight supplied and installed. We provide a full upfront quote before any work starts. Call 0415 240 296.
How many LED downlights do I need per room?
A common rule of thumb is one downlight for every 1.4 to 1.6 square metres of floor space, but the right number depends on ceiling height, room shape, beam angle, and the brightness of the fitting. We can plan a layout that delivers even, glare-free light with no dark corners.
Can you replace my old halogen downlights with LED?
Yes. Halogen-to-LED retrofit is one of our most common jobs on the Sunshine Coast. We remove the old halogen transformers, fit modern LED downlights, and check that your dimmer (if any) is LED compatible. Most full-home retrofits are completed in a single day.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install LED downlights?
Yes. Cutting holes in ceilings and connecting fixed wiring is licensed electrical work in Queensland. DIY installation voids insurance and breaches the Electrical Safety Act. Every Xceed install is performed by a licensed electrician (QLD Licence 1510557) and is fully insured.
What is the difference between IC-4 and non-IC rated downlights?
IC-4 (or IC) rated downlights can be safely covered by ceiling insulation, while older non-IC fittings must keep insulation clear. We always specify IC-4 or IC-F rated downlights so your insulation can be installed continuously - keeping your home thermally efficient and reducing fire risk.
Can downlights be installed in bathrooms?
Yes, but they must be IP-rated for the zone they sit in. We use IP44 or IP65 downlights directly above showers, baths, and outdoor eaves to comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. Standard downlights are not safe in wet zones.
Are dimmable LED downlights worth it?
For living areas, bedrooms, and dining rooms - absolutely. Dimmable downlights let you set the right mood, save energy, and extend the life of your fittings. The catch is compatibility: not every LED works with every dimmer. We match the LED, driver, and dimmer to make sure it just works, no flickering or buzzing.
How long do LED downlights last?
Quality LED downlights are rated for around 25,000 to 50,000 hours - that is roughly 15 to 25 years of normal household use. Compare that to halogen at 1,000 to 2,000 hours, and the savings on globe replacements alone are significant.
Will new downlights need switchboard upgrades or extra circuits?
Most retrofits run on the existing lighting circuit because LED downlights draw far less power than halogens. New layouts in renovations or extensions sometimes need a dedicated lighting circuit, especially with smart or dimmable fittings. We assess this during the quote stage and include any switchboard work upfront.
Do you supply the downlights or do I install fittings I have purchased?
Either way works. We supply quality LED downlights from trusted brands as part of a complete fixed-price install, or we are happy to install fittings you have purchased yourself. Note: if you supply the fittings, the manufacturer warranty covers the product, while our workmanship warranty applies to the install.
Are LED downlights a fire risk?
Modern IC-4 rated LED downlights are very low fire risk - they run cool and are designed to be safely covered by ceiling insulation. Older halogen downlights are a documented fire risk because they run at over 250 degrees Celsius and require insulation to be cut back. If your Sunshine Coast home still has halogens, retrofitting to IC-4 LED downlights is one of the simplest ways to reduce fire risk and lower insurance scrutiny.
Can I install LED downlights myself on the Sunshine Coast?
No. Cutting holes in ceilings and connecting fixed wiring is licensed electrical work under the Queensland Electrical Safety Act. DIY downlight installation voids your home insurance and is illegal even for plug-in style fittings if they connect to fixed wiring. Every Xceed install is completed by a licensed electrician (QLD Licence 1510557) and is fully insured.
What is the difference between IC-4 and IC-F rated downlights?
IC-4 means the LED downlight can be in direct contact with insulation and abutted by it on all sides. IC-F (Insulation Contact - Friable) is a stricter rating allowing direct contact with loose-fill or sprayed insulation as well. Both are safe; IC-F is the most flexible choice for newer Sunshine Coast homes with batt or sprayed insulation in the ceiling space.
Will LED downlights work with my existing dimmer?
Sometimes. Older halogen-era trailing-edge dimmers often cause LED downlights to flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly. We test compatibility on the spot and, if needed, swap to a modern LED-rated dimmer. Replacing the dimmer typically takes 15 minutes and eliminates flickering for good.
How long does LED downlight installation take on the Sunshine Coast?
A simple halogen-to-LED swap of 6 to 10 fittings usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours. A full-home retrofit of 25 to 40 LED downlights is typically completed in a single day. New-build or renovation installs depend on the lighting plan and access. We give you a confirmed time window with every quote.
