Things You Didn't Know About Liverpool
On a significant day in November 1810, Governor Lachlan Macquarie founded Liverpool, naming it to honour the Earl of Liverpool, who was then the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Out of all the towns in Australia, Liverpool proudly stands as the fourth oldest, following Sydney, Parramatta, and Hobart. What sets Liverpool apart is its distinction as Australia’s first free planned settlement.
Liverpool’s architectural elegance owes a lot to Francis Greenway, an emancipated architect appointed by Macquarie. One of his timeless pieces is St Lukes church, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1818. Another is the TAFE College, originally constructed as the first hospital.
Liverpool embraced modernity early on. In September 1856, the introduction of the railway and the subsequent establishment of the electric telegraph in 1858 marked pivotal moments. These innovations catalysed Liverpool’s evolution into a major regional city.
Local governance has been a part of Liverpool’s fabric since 1848, with the proclamation of the Liverpool Municipality in 1872. Richard Sadleir made history as the first Mayor.
World War I left its mark on Liverpool. The region buzzed with military training, and Holsworthy held German prisoners of war. The significance of the Holsworthy-Moorebank area continued during World War II, as it became a hub for training and housing troops. The Army’s association with Liverpool remains strong, evident through the Holsworthy barracks and field training establishment.
Today, Liverpool is a bustling city with a population exceeding 214,000. Projections indicate that by 2031, this figure will soar to over 300,000. Spanning 305 square kilometres, Liverpool is a blend of its rich past and promising future. While retaining its semi-rural charm, Liverpool’s city centre burgeons with commercial and retail dynamism.
