Is test and tag a legal requirement in Queensland?
Yes. Test and tag is mandatory in Queensland for specific workplaces, particularly those covered by the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 and AS/NZS 3012 - including construction, mining, and demolition sites, where testing must occur every 3 to 6 months. While not all workplaces have a strict legal mandate, all employers have a general duty of care under the Work Health and Safety Act to ensure electrical equipment is safe. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted standard for demonstrating compliance. Equipment that fails must be immediately removed from service and tagged with a warning label. Testing must be performed by a competent person such as a qualified electrician.
How often does test and tag need to be done?
Testing frequency depends on the environment. Construction sites require three-monthly testing. Offices and retail environments typically require annual testing. Hostile environments such as workshops may require six-monthly testing.
