QLD Smoke Alarm Compliance for Sunshine Coast Homes
Queensland has some of the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia, and for good reason - working smoke alarms save lives. Since 1 January 2022, all Queensland homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home.
Xceed Electrical provides complete smoke alarm installation, upgrade, and compliance services across the Sunshine Coast. We supply and install hardwired photoelectric smoke alarms with battery backup, interconnected so that when one alarm activates, they all sound. This gives your family the earliest possible warning in an emergency.
Whether you are a homeowner, landlord, property manager, or selling your home, we ensure your property meets all current QLD smoke alarm requirements. Non-compliance can result in significant fines and, more importantly, puts lives at risk.

Smoke Alarms - Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
What are the QLD smoke alarm requirements for homeowners?
Since 1 January 2022, all Queensland homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home. Alarms must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year lithium battery.
Do I need hardwired or battery smoke alarms in QLD?
Both are acceptable under QLD legislation, provided they are photoelectric and interconnected. However, hardwired alarms with battery backup are the most reliable option and are required in new builds and major renovations.
How much does smoke alarm installation cost on the Sunshine Coast?
The cost depends on the number of alarms needed, whether hardwired or wireless interconnection is used, and the layout of your home. We provide a full upfront quote after assessing your property. Call 0415 240 296.
What is the difference between photoelectric and ionisation smoke alarms?
Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering fires faster and produce fewer false alarms. Ionisation alarms are being phased out in Queensland. Current QLD legislation requires photoelectric alarms in all homes.
What happens if my smoke alarms are not QLD compliant?
Non-compliant smoke alarms put your family at risk and can result in fines. If you are selling or renting your property, compliance is mandatory. We can assess your home and bring it up to standard quickly and affordably.
How often should smoke alarms be tested?
Smoke alarms should be tested monthly by pressing the test button. They should be professionally inspected annually. Alarms must be replaced every 10 years or according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Can you install smoke alarms in a rental property I manage?
Yes. We work with landlords and property managers across the Sunshine Coast to ensure rental properties meet all QLD smoke alarm legislation. We provide compliance certificates upon completion.
